Richard Silver, a spokesman for C-SPAN, the network that broadcasts unedited programming relating to U.S. political events, announced that they have reached an agreement with the Republican Party to produce a reality show tentatively titled “Get Real With The GOP”.
“When Donald Trump gained traction we felt that there was an opportunity to capitalize on the animosity within the party’s different factions as well as to expand our content. To say that we weren’t disappointed with the results would be an understatement.” Silver said.
A handful of crews initially began filming but soon were overwhelmed by the increasing need to cover the dissension within the GOP in the Senate, the Congress and out on the campaign trail.
“Our budget began to skyrocket. We already had a returning cast from 2012 that in themselves were great material, Huckabee, Perry, Paul, but when you add wildcards like Fiorina, Carson and, of course, Trump it’s all hands on deck.
“Then we had to cover the unexpected disintegration in the race for Speaker of the House, the Kentucky county clerk involved in the gay marriage issue announcing her decision to change parties and some House member’s threat to undermine the federal government. Each one added an element of real time drama that fit into the structure of a reality show. The GOP was making ‘Survivor’ look like a model of cooperation and the ‘Real World’ an actual depiction of the real world.”
The obvious reluctance by some members of the GOP to highlight the party’s disagreements was to be expected but others in the party began to realize that it was all going to come out in the press anyway. By packaging the issues in a reality format a communications spokesperson for the GOP, who wished to remain anonymous, said that they ‘hoped it would get a following with the coveted thirteen through thirty something audience that such programming appealed to as well as the unemployed, under educated and easily misled viewers. It’s the kind of branding we need to explore.”
“A vote’s a vote.” The spokesperson added.
